His Holiness writes:
The tremendous diversity of world's cultures reflects the richness and creative scope of the human mind and heart. My own Tibetan tradition is one such important human cultural heritage. Not only is it one of the last surviving ancient civilizations of the world, perhaps more importantly, it is also a culture that has important relevance in the modern world. Today there is a growing recognition amongst humanity that knowledge and insights of one culture are in actual fact the heritage of the entire mankind.
It is with this background that I am very happy to welcome the initiatives of the INSTITUTE OF TIBETAN CLASSICS, Montreal, especially its ambitious program of developing The Library of Tibetan Classics. This program attempts to bring together, both in the original Tibetan and English translations, many of the works by Tibet's greatest minds produced over a period of more than a thousand years. When completed, the Classics series will represent a comprehensive reference library of the most important Tibetan classics embracing the entire spectrum of Tibetan thought and artistic traditions. The creation of such a series could make Tibet's classical thought truly a world heritage, an intellectual and spiritual resource open to all. As someone who has been nourished by these works I strongly believe that the insights embodied in the classical Tibetan texts will be of interest and benefit to many.
I wish the INSTITUTE OF TIBETAN CLASSICS every success and pray that its key program of creating the The Library of Tibetan Classics will proceed in full accordance with its vision. I would also like to request to you to extend whatever assistance, financial or otherwise, that you could to help facilitate the success of this crucial educational and cultural conservancy initiative
